Tour De Yorkshire 2017: Thurgoland Bank, South Yorkshire

30th April 2017 and the Tour De Yorkshire 2017 came to Penistone, South Yorkshire! Not only did it come to Penistone it passed by the end of my road. That’s not where I choose to see it though, I walked over to Thurgoland Bank and positioned myself half-way up the hill; I wanted to photograph the riders and thought seeing them struggle up the hill would be more interesting.

I positioned myself just on the apex of a bend, that way I had a clear view straight down the road and would see the riders head-on as they came up the hill. I was shooting with my Canon 5D and equipped with a 70-300mm zoom; it just about practical enough to hand hold and still be reasonably confident of sharp results. The day was a bit overcast so I was shooting at ISO 800-1600 to retain a fast shutter speed and minimize any chances of camera shake.

The riders were past and gone in less than a minute, so I had to shoot fast. I’m reasonably pleased with the results and enjoyed the experience.

Since the Tour De Yorkshire 2017, I’ve begun riding my own bike again. One day soon I might attempt the Thurgoland Bank climb, though so far I’ve only managed a few ‘Category 4’ climbs. I have to confess, it looks a lot more difficult than these riders made it appear!
